The Prompt Formula That Works Across Midjourney, DALL-E, and Stable Diffusion
I wasted three weeks learning Midjourney prompts, only to realize they barely worked in DALL-E. Then I found a formula that works everywhere.
The Problem With Tool-Specific Prompts
Every AI image generator has its quirks. Midjourney loves --ar 16:9 flags. Stable Diffusion needs negative prompts. DALL-E wants natural language.
But switching between tools meant rewriting everything. Until I tested a universal structure that actually works.
The Universal Formula
Here's what works across all three platforms:
[Subject] + [Style] + [Lighting] + [Composition]
That's it. Four components in order. No fancy parameters, no tool-specific syntax.
Real Examples That Worked
I tested this formula across Midjourney, DALL-E, and Stable Diffusion with the same base prompt:
"Ancient library, watercolor illustration, soft morning light, wide angle view"
All three tools generated usable images. The watercolor style came through. The lighting felt consistent. The composition matched.
Compare that to my old approach: "epic ancient library with dramatic lighting --ar 16:9 --v 6" only worked in Midjourney. DALL-E ignored the flags. Stable Diffusion got confused.
Why This Formula Works
Each component targets something all AI models understand:
Subject tells the model what to generate. Be specific but not restrictive. "Ancient library" works better than "library with old books and wooden shelves."
Style sets the artistic direction. "Watercolor illustration" or "cinematic photography" or "3D render" all work universally.
Lighting controls mood without tool-specific parameters. "Soft morning light" beats "golden hour dramatic lighting with lens flare."
Composition frames the shot. "Wide angle view" or "close-up portrait" or "bird's eye view" translate across platforms.
The Template You Can Copy
Use this structure for any image:
[Specific subject], [art style], [lighting description], [camera angle]
Examples that worked for me:
- "Cyberpunk street market, neon photography, purple and blue lighting, street level view"
- "Mountain landscape, oil painting, sunset glow, panoramic composition"
- "Coffee cup on desk, minimalist design, natural window light, overhead shot"
What This Formula Won't Fix
This isn't magic. You'll still get occasional weird hands in Stable Diffusion. DALL-E might interpret "cyberpunk" differently than Midjourney. Some styles work better on specific platforms.
But you'll spend less time rewriting prompts and more time generating images.
How to Improve Your Results
Start with the formula, then iterate. If the subject isn't clear enough, add one descriptive word. If the style feels off, try a different art movement or medium.

The Real Shortcut
The formula works, but writing prompts still takes time. Testing across three platforms takes even longer.
